宮本武蔵 Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645)
Swordsman, philosopher, military strategist, and artist of the early Edo period. Founder of the Niten Ichiryu school of military arts, which used two swords. He is famous for his duel with Sasaki Kojiro at Ganryujima Island. It is said that he never lost any of his 60 or so duels during his lifetime. He also showed extraordinary talent in ink painting and calligraphy.

This hanging scroll, attributed to Miyamoto Musashi (1584–1645), features a portrait of Confucius (Kōshi), the revered Chinese philosopher and founder of Confucianism. Rendered in expressive ink and accompanied by classical calligraphy, the figure is depicted with dignified serenity, embodying the ideals of wisdom and moral cultivation. Musashi, famed as a swordsman, strategist, and founder of the Niten Ichiryu school of two-sword technique, was also a gifted painter and calligrapher in his later years. This work bears the seal “Niten” (二天), a name Musashi adopted in his final period, reflecting his philosophical evolution and artistic maturity. The scroll is housed in a box and represents the rare intersection of martial and scholarly traditions in early Edo-period Japan.
