Chujo Shozan (b1955)
A ceramist born in Kyoto. In 1975, he trained at a pottery studio in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, where he also studied ink wash painting and traditional Japanese painting. He went on to win various awards and established his own kiln in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district in 1983.

The warm, softly whitened surface created by the kohiki technique becomes the setting for branches of weeping cherry blossoms painted with the measured, decorative clarity that Chujo Shozan developed through his training in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district—where ink painting and traditional Japanese painting informed his sense of line—and the seal “Shozan” affirms the hand of a potter who established his own kiln in 1983, the bowl’s gentle contrast between the powdery white ground and the pink blossoms suggesting how it might settle naturally into someone’s routine, brought out on quiet spring evenings when a touch of colour feels welcome, its surface slowly deepening in tone as kohiki vessels do, all kept together with its tomobako.
