鈴木松年 Suzuki Shonen (1848-1918)
Japanese painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Kyoto. Eldest son of 鈴木百年 Suzuki Hyakunen (1828-1891). He studied painting under his father from an early age. He was the first master of the female painter 上村松園 Uemura Shoen (1875-1949). Specialized in landscapes, flowers and birds, and portraits in a vigorous and robust style, and was called the second coming of Soga Shohaku. It is well known that he had constant quarrels with competing painters of the same period. Especially he did not get along with 幸野楳嶺 Kono Bairei (1844-1895). But actually, the real thing might be opposite. This is because when Kono Bairei passed away, it was Shonen who was the first to visit to offer his condolences.

小西福年 Konishi Fukunen (1887-1959)
Born in Fukui Prefecture in 1887. He was apprenticed to Suzuki Shonen in Kyoto, where he received the name "Fukunen" from his teacher. He also studied Noh drama and tea ceremony to enhance his painting style. He excelled in landscape and flower-and-bird paintings.

This hanging scroll presents a serene scene of a pine tree standing before the softly rising sun, a motif long associated in Japan with renewal, perseverance and auspicious fortune. Painted by Suzuki Shōnen (1848–1918), one of the leading Kyoto artists of the Meiji era, the work displays his characteristic brushwork: bold, expressive ink for the powerful pine branches, contrasted with delicate washes that evoke the quiet glow of dawn. The scroll is accompanied by an appraisal box inscribed by Konishi Fukunen (1887–1959) in 1927, a respected scholar and appraiser of the early Shōwa period. His inscription adds a layer of historical context and affirms the esteem in which this work was held. The composition itself conveys both strength and tranquility, making it a refined addition to any Japanese art collection.
