三好賢古 Miyoshi Kenko (1839-1919) Japanese art Paired kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scrolls / Rising Sun and Moon RD847

三好賢古 Miyoshi Kenko (1839-1919)
A Japanese-style painter born in Tokushima. Studied under Morizumi Tsurana and Sumiyoshi Kōken. Excels in Buddhist paintings and flower-and-bird compositions.

with signature 'Minamoto no Kenko ga' 源賢古 画 and seal 'Miyoshi Kenko' 三好賢古

This elegant pair of Japanese hanging scrolls features a full moon (ginpa) and a rising sun (kinpa), symbolizing the yin-yang balance and cosmic rhythm of nature. The composition is known as “Kinpa Ginpa”—literally “golden waves and silver waves”—a poetic reference to the shimmering reflections of moonlight and sunlight on water. The artist, Miyoshi Kenko (1839–1919), was a master of the Sumiyoshi school, trained under Morozumi Tsurana and Sumiyoshi Hirokata. His works blend decorative elegance with spiritual depth, often drawing on classical themes and Buddhist philosophy. These scrolls evoke the cycle of time, seasonal transition, and contemplative harmony, making them ideal for display in tea rooms, meditation spaces, or seasonal interiors. Kenko’s brushwork and use of subtle gradients reflect the refined aesthetics of late Edo and Meiji-period painting.
