On the box, the previous owner named 坦庵主人 Tanan shujin has written in red the artist's detail, the date is 1899 (Meiji 32).

田中訥言 Tanaka Totsugen (1767-1823)
Studied under Tosa Mitsusada in Kyoto. Studied the techniques of the Tosa school and attempted to restore the Yamato-e of the Heian and Kamakura periods. Late in life, he lost his eyesight and committed suicide in agony.
