Painter from Nagoya in the late Edo period. Studied painting in Nagasaki under the Qing (China) painter Ho Seien and others. He was friends with Nakabayashi Chikuto and Yamamoto Baiitsu.

The two birds rest closely on a plum branch whose early blossoms open in uneven clusters, and the light catches the upper edges of the petals while leaving the lower strokes of the branch in a firmer ink, giving the scene a gentle shift between brightness and shade; Makoku’s handling reflects the clarity he absorbed from Qing painters in Nagasaki, with the birds’ postures drawn in a way that feels observed rather than embellished, and the scroll bears the signature ‘Makoku’ with the seal ‘Keitoku,’ while the contrast between the birds and the pale blossoms tends, as the piece is viewed over time, to draw attention back to the small variations in posture and petal tone, creating a quiet continuity that feels unforced.
