This scroll comes with an appraised box inscribed and signed by “雲亭仙史 Untei Senshi,”

中林竹洞 Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853)
Nanga artist of the late Edo period. Known as a theoretical leader of literati painting at the end of the Edo period and as a nobleman. Born into a family of doctors in Nagoya, he studied painting under 山田宮常 Yamada Kyujo (1747-1794) at first. The fellow-pupil was 山本梅逸 Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856). At the age of 27, he moved to Kyoto with Baiitsu and opened his own studio as a painter, while also studying Confucian and Japanese studies. He was a theoretician and author of many works. He excelled in Sansui landscapes, flowers, and birds, and his landscapes in particular are elegant and tranquil. His son 中林竹渓 Nakabayashi Chikkei (1816-1867) is also famous as a painter.

Age: 1847 April (Lunar calendar) / 丁未清和月
with signature 'Chikuto Sanjin' 竹洞山人 and seal 'Narimasa no in' 成昌之印 'Chikuto Sanjin' 竹洞山人

A poetic hanging scroll by Nakabayashi Chikuto, a leading Nanga painter and theoretician of the late Edo period. Dated April 1847 (丁未清和月), the composition features a long-tailed bird perched quietly beneath the moonlight, surrounded by delicate foliage. The scene evokes solitude and elegance, hallmarks of Chikuto’s literati style. Born in Nagoya and trained under Yamada Kyūjo, Chikuto later moved to Kyoto with fellow painter Yamamoto Baiitsu, where he deepened his studies in Confucian and Japanese thought. Signed Chikuto Sanjin (竹洞山人) and sealed Narimasa no in (成昌之印) and Chikuto Sanjin (竹洞山人), the scroll is accompanied by an appraised box inscribed and signed by Untei Senshi (雲亭仙史), adding provenance and scholarly recognition. A refined and contemplative work, ideal for collectors of Edo-period literati painting.
